Selfie With Daughter
A village sarpanch to addressing a seminar for corporate leaders is not really something that happens every day but that is precisely what happened on July 21, 2015. The sarpanch of Jind district’s Bibipur village addressed a seminar for corporate leaders at Gurgaon on the aforementioned date. This man named Sunil Jaglan started a small campaign called “Selfie With Daughter” to promote the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative of Indian government.
Jaglan’s initiative picked up and was noticed and praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after which Jaglan made it to the headlines. In the meantime, Jaglan received a telephone call from Chief Minister’s Office of Haryana in which CM Manohar Lal Khattar asked the sarpanch to address corporate leaders at a seminar based on PM’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao national drive.
Jaglan said earlier, “I was surprised to receive an invitation call from CMO for the event. I haven’t received the formal invitation yet but the organizers will be sending it to me through email.”
The sarpanch also said that he was asked to prepare a 20-minute-speech on the theme of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao drive and that an official team from the organizers visited his village for a video shoot to capture the initiative taken by the villagers to save female children. According to Jaglan, the video was meant for the seminar where the initiatives of the village were shown.
Jaglan climbed the popularity ladder after PM Narendra Modi praised him in the popular radio show, ‘Mann Ki Baat’. Despite his nationwide popularity, Jaglan had to face some serious criticisms back home in his village. A police complaint was filed against the sarpanch by the opposing villagers on the grounds that a news channel and Jaglan deliberately showcased an incorrect picture of Bibipur village on the TV show that was aired in June, 2015.
Jaglan said that in retaliation he met Abhishek Jorwal, the Superintendent of Police of Jind district and asked for a proper action against him [Jaglan] if taking actions to improve the village’s poor sex ratio is considered a sin. He also appealed for proper actions against those who filed the complaint if they fail to provide proper proofs of their allegations.
The sarpanch later reported that he received a call from CM in which he was asked to continue his good work without fearing anything or anybody. SP Jorwal on the other hand reported that the complaint made by Jaglan’s opponents have been forwarded to district attorney and is awaiting legal opinion.
Jaglan Aims Higher: To Launch “Jagrook Laado” Campaign
“Selfie With Daughter” was just the beginning for the sarpanch. After the initial campaign, Jaglan went on to motivate villages to engrave the nameplates their daughters’ name and put them right outside their houses. Now Jaglan aims to take another step in form of an initiative he calls ‘Jagrook Laado’. This new proposed campaign by Jaglan is also aligned with the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao drive of PM.
According to Jaglan, the aim of this campaign will be to educate girls about their rights and Indian laws that empower them. The sarpanch aims towards educating girls about laws that shield them from crimes committed against women in India, process of lodging a proper police complaint in the event of eve teasing and tackling harassments faced by women in public places.
